Hamilton Crossings 3D Model Part 4 - Follow Up

Previously on Planner 47 Blog

Hamilton Crossings was uploaded and reviewed (the relevant part can be found here)

And now the follow up.

Follow Up

Most Annoying Facet of Model

The Typhoon Eye Art/Plaza/Fountain

Reason: Stands out far too much even for my tastes

I can't completely explain this one.  It serves as a part of the "welcoming" when one arrives at the Hamilton Crossings development and at its core it suitable, providing seating, a water feature and an art feature.  However, the blues can be confusing looking and the mosaic format definitely divisive.  There's also the fact that the water portion is missing fencing...  It might not be that big a problem, but thanks to it, there's absolutely nothing preventing someone from stepping in, or falling in.

Art To Usable Amenities

Book Fountain Plaza

Reason: Award explains itself but I'll give a brief summary regardless.

This is for taking a common amenity and making it into art or supplementing it with art.  The Book Fountain wins this due to the Typhoon Eye lacking a fence and the fact it could be harder to use and the Botanical Bay plant sign being tucked out of the way (unfortunately).

We also have...

Bad Spellers of the world, "Untie"!

Canal 'Catina' (Cantina)

Reason: The award explains itself... again

Just goes to show that there's a need to check spelling.  Sketchup doesn't have a spell check and even before that, its easy to make a typo and completely miss it until long after everything is done.  (See: Zoning Ordinances from cities across the U.S. and of course plenty of other works in text).  This "award" is here for fun and a reminder that even 47 can make mistakes.  Spoiler alert: this is not the only Bad Spellers award.

There is also a

Get Out Of My Way Already!

Kiosk in front of the "Downtown" building

Reason: Kiosk in the way of pedestrian pathways and a building entrance

Other thoughts,

I've decided not to give the Speedway/Gas Station in a building a "Yeah, Whatever" award because something like it has been done.  Its not entirely impossible.  In retrospect perhaps the Yeah, Whatever for the "elemental" parks in the Hamilton Plaza model might have been wrongly awarded.  But looking at those images as type this, those thoughts are quickly being dispelled.  Parks in a parking lot have been done, but artistic mosaic pieces combined with parks in a parking lot, seem like too much, and far more unlikely than the gas station in a building.

And now for the final item:

Final Score: 5 out of 10

Average. But still Good in its own way.

Admittedly the same could be said for Hamilton Plaza.  I'd take that or Hamilton Crossings any day compared to what exists and what's usually proposed for new commercial developments.  Focusing on Hamilton Crossings, some key elements within my modeling are on display: providing various amenities for customers and residents, art to amenities, archetype mixed use buildings, landscaping in an urbanist/suburban retrofit sense.

Regardless, the model is still fairly basic when compared to the entirety of my 3D models of this nature and there are some notable missteps found here that (mostly) avoided in some of the other models.  One thing to keep in mind is the fact that this was an earlier sketchup model and from my perspective things really evolved as I kept at the craft.  Hopefully this will be apparent as newer models are shared and go through this same process, though its understandable people will have different opinions on the models.
